He also has Phoebe, his little sister, and Jane, his old neighbor who he liked for a while. He has Allie, his brother who passed away. Holden feels so alone throughout the novel except for a few parts. Holden even has a man against society conflict, because he feels like no one that he comes across is good enough for him. He created this thought that adulthood is a world of hypocrisy and childhood is a world of innocence. He even states “People are always ruining things for you. His idea of “phonies” is ruining him because it causes him to do things such as run off to New York City. Holden is faced with a lot of “phonies” everywhere. He says he feels trapped on “the other side” of life. He is constantly stating how depressed he is, and cannot find joy in a lot of situations. While Huck deals with a man against society type of situation, Holden is put through a man against self conflict. “Turn him loose! Huck choosing to help Jim is one of the decisions that leads Huck to where he is a much more satisfied person leading to his adulthood. Huck runs away to be freed from his abusive father that only wants Huck’s wealth, and later encounters Miss Watson’s runaway slave, Jim. They try to change him when he clearly states that he doesn’t want to conform to society. The Widow Douglas and Miss Watson try to “sivilize” Huck by making him stop all his bad habits, such as smoking. Most people see Huck as a mischievous boy and a bad influence. In the book “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” Huck deals with a lot of racism and slavery. In both novels the difficult journeys are represented throughout until the end where they are at the point where they are both happy. Both of the boys went through numerous difficulties to get to a satisfied time in their life. ” It demonstrates how Huckleberry Finn and Holden Caulfield went through there adolescent years and transformed into enhanced individuals. ” This quote relates to the stories of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and “The Catcher in the Rye.
